In this eight-session course (2 weeks per session), you will learn to write stories about your life in essay form. Not only will you write about events from the past, but you will add reflective thoughts and feelings as you look back upon the events. You will learn to write personal essays that satisfy the writer through self-exploration and entertain the reader by using literary techniques. If publication is your goal, you'll learn how to identify print and online publications that publish what you write and how to submit your work. Homework assignments supply you with topics (three are suggested each session; you pick one) and prompting questions to get you started, but once you begin writing, you are the navigator of your own exploration. It will be up to you to question why that particular memory popped into your head, why you're telling the story you're telling, what insight you're discovering as you look back in time. You'll write one homework essay for each of seven sessions and receive a detailed critique from the instructor. The instructor is available for questions via email throughout the course. This class is for any adult, regardless of age or writing experience, who wants to explore writing as a medium for recording life's journey. Many students enjoy taking this course again and again to write on the different homework topics, which change every session, and to reread the lecture material from a different perspective as life changes occur.
